The digital innovations from Leicestershire transforming 2021

A lot of skill, effort and energy has to go into innovating something that could transform people’s everyday lives. Starting with an idea and followed by intricate fine-tuning, a brilliant innovation is evidence of a great pioneer.

The LeicestershireLive Innovation Awards is bringing together all of the ambitious people and companies from across the region who are making waves in their industry because of their ingenuity.

With many awards to be handed out on Thursday, September 14, at the National Space Centre in Leicester, the diverse talent throughout Leicestershire is getting the recognition that it deserves.

The event’s headline sponsors are De Montfort University, Morningside Pharmaceuticals and University of Leicester; and the associate sponsor is LLEP Business Gateway.

We live in an age where we take for granted life-changing technology that fits snuggly into our coat pockets, the dashboards of cars and around our wrists. The Digital Innovation of the Year category, sponsored by De Montfort University, commends top digital projects that have been conceived or developed within our city and county.

The finalists are:

Aviary is a Twitter client app that gives the user additional features, such as translating and deciphering text from images for accessibility purposes. It helped people to stay in touch with friends during the pandemic and get the latest news stories via its explore section. The app was such a success that Twitter’s own development team now reaches out to Aviary for help testing new features. Created by one person in just two months, it has changed the user experience for many for the better.

BrainBerry Ltd

BrainBerry’s COSMA app (Cognitive Operational Software for MentalHealth Advancement) is a brain stimulation gaming platform delivering cognitive rehabilitation and psychological well-being support to people living with dementia. The therapeutic aspect of the tool is based on the science of neuroplasticity: the ability of the brain to change both physically and functionally throughout a person’s life.

Thanks to raised funding, the COSMA App is undergoing final clinical trials to deliver the first clinically-validated early intervention product for dementia sufferers.

De Montfort University

De Montfort University is a resource for the business community, bringing academics, graduates and industry together to support innovation, growth and skills development, focusing on improving digital competence. Its flagship Impacting Business By Design provides funded design support for SMEs to bring new products to market. It has the eighth highest number of start-ups of any UK university.

University of Leicester

University of Leicester delivers inspirational teaching and world-changing research and innovation. It supports innovators and businesses through a range of industry collaborations including the £5.1m Leicester Innovation Hub, making it easy to hire talented graduates and utilise the university’s expertise and facilities. Space Park Leicester is the university’s flagship project to grow the Leicestershire space innovation cluster.

Morningside Pharmaceuticals

Morningside Pharmaceuticals is an award-winning innovator, manufacturer and supplier of high-quality generic medicines and healthcare products to the UK and internationally. It is proud to deliver twice daily to the NHS and be one of the UK’s leading medical suppliers to aid organisations, having exported to more than 120 countries since its inception in 1991.

tuck. is a discovery-based mobile app that connects users with small and medium-sized businesses, rewarding them with cash back if they shop. Its Open Banking Technology connects rewards to the user’s bank card, providing instant gratification, there’s no wait to get the reward and fewer steps to receiving it, getting rid of the need for discount codes and loyalty points. Users can then choose what to do with the cash, including donating to charity, giving back to the community or tipping a waiter at their favourite restaurant.
